You are invited to Heritage Day, Albion’s celebration of the community’s historical significance as one of the earliest established cities in Illinois.

At Heritage Day, visitors interested in investigating Albion’s history may visit a variety of local sites including the first established public library in the state, an 18th century home of an prominent Albion businessman, an antebellum log cabin, and the local historical society building full of documentation of the city’s historical significance.

New on the tour this year are a restored one-room country school house ( the Montgomery School ) and Grimm Acres, a farm specializing in heritage animals such as Irish Dexter Cattle, American Guinea Hogs, Tennessee Fainting Goats, and Heritage chickens, ducks, turkeys, and geese.

The central focus of the celebration is at the Edwards County Courthouse, a historical building, in the center of Albion. On the courthouse lawn, re-enactors will demonstrate early prairie skills and arts including wood carving, basket weaving, blacksmithing, crocheting, jewelry making (including jewelry out of deer antlers), and surviving in the backwoods. New this year is the washer woman demonstrating how our ancestors performed the weekly laundry chore.

Also available on the square are carriage rides and heritage animals on sale by Grimm Acres. Other vendors will be selling pumpkins, hickory fired chowder (a local traditional specialty), and baked goods. Inside the courthouse, visitors can speak with George and Martha Washington and listen to harp music.

Throughout the day, visitors can shop at the city-wide rummage sales or participate in the 5 K run. Come, join us October 1 and discover the rich history of Southern Illinois.
